Android-x86 2.2 (Froyo-x86) is released!

The Android-x86 project announced the new stable version 2.2 to the public.

Key Features

The is based on the Android 2.2.1 (Froyo branch). We fixed and added many x86 specified code to let the system runs smoothly on x86 platforms, especially for netbooks or tablets. The key features contain

Kernel 2.6.35.7 with KMS enabled. Most netbooks can run Android-x86 in the native resolution.
Hardware OpenGL acceleration for Intel integrated graphic chipsets. It is turned on by default if the i915 driver is available. However, if you have trouble with it, you can disable it by adding HWACCEL=0 to the cmdline. (by olv from 0xlab)
Wifi and Ethernet support. Both are configured from the GUI.
Support 3G USB modem with auto-configuration.
A text based GUI installer which supports ext3/ext2/ntfs/fat32 filesystems.
The installer is improved to support read-write mode, as well as a tool to create a fake sdcard.
Bluetooth support for builtin device and external bluetooth dongle.
Keyboard layout is configurable. To use it, you have to install Android-x86 to harddisk and reboot after changing the setting.
External usb drive and sdcard are auto mounted on plugging.
Add touch features to simulate Home/Menu/Back keys, useful for touchscreen only devices.
Add software mouse cursor. Mouse wheel is also supported.
Compressed filesystem (squashfs).
MirBSD Korn Shell (mksh) is added to replace android's dumb sh.
Touchscreen calibration.
Battery status percentage.
AndAppStore client 1.6.8.
Atom optimization for dalvik and bionic.

Professional Security Audit for Piwik 1.1

In the past, whenever we received security related questions and suggestions for Piwik, sent to oursecurity@piwik.org address, we quickly reacted and released a fix in a new Piwik release. However, going forward, we want to be proactive, so we requested a professional and thorough review of our code base.

SektionEins, a leading software security company based in Germany, undertook the professional security review of the Piwik source code. Stefan Esser conducted the audit on the Piwik source code for 5 full days. Stefan then sent us all the details about what could be improved in Piwik regarding security (various recommendations, XSS, etc.). Anthon and Matt from the Piwik team then prepared fixes and improvements following the security audit, which were then released in Piwik 1.1.

We would like to give a huge thanks to SektionEins and Stefan Esser for their work and support to Piwik and the open source community. We are very happy with their service, and can only recommend all other open source projects (and of course any closed source softwares) to contract them for security audits, consulting and/or security training.

BOINC software client runs faster on a Mac

I did some testing with the BOINC client on two virtual machines.

BOINC is a software product where you give the unused processor cycles of your pc to this program. The program is than getting a piece of work and under takes some calculations on this workunit, when finished it is send to the project where the workunit is from. I used the BOINC software for http://worldcommunitygrid.org/ and do some work for helping to fight cancer (help to find a way to solve this illness).

I made two virtual machine on my iMac, one with windows 2008R2 and 1 cpu with 1488MB of RAM, and one with Mac OS X server (10.6) and 1 cpu with 1024MB of memory. Both the virtual machines ran simulationsely on the same iMac with vmware Fusion! And where the mac's takes off with some percentage more than minutes, windows losses its % against the minutes. It looks something like this,

00:16:00 25.xxx% 14.xxx%

And this keeps going on, on one workunit Mac OS X Server just needs one full hour for this, the windows 2008R2 needs at least 1 hour 30 minutes. I liked to have a linux calculation in this short overview, but saddly enough my aptosid installation didn't allow me yet to start the boincmanager, and the commandlines didn't work. I look into this and report back to you about this time.

For now I shutdown the windows client, cause it takes to much time away and let the mac os x client go on with its work. If you are interested in green energy, the clean project part 2 is now also available for Mac OS X and Windows.

But keep in mind the time difference, you really can see here how the os is internally managing its processes and memory calls, I saw it before when I ran seti@home and the difference between linux and windows. Of course I know the workunits aren't the same, and ofcourse I didn't look at one workunit, the above values are also estimated times.

sidux is now aptosid

as you might know the linux distribution sidux is no more, it had some problems with the financial club connected to it, so all the developers went away and made a new distribution called aptosid which ofcourse has everything to do with debian sid again but now all income is for the developers and thier servers.

I installed aptosid and it works like I'm used to with sidux, it is stable and fast, go try it out at http://aptosid.com/

Nvidia stops with opensource driver

Nvidia stops developing thier opensource driver, xf86-video-nv-driver, cause it just has limited functionality and no 3d hardware acceleration.
Nvidia says that the users then should use the closed source nvidia driver or the Nouveau-driver or even a Vesa driver for the enviroment.

It aims to develop a general USB device sharing system over IP network. To share USB devices between computers with their full functionality, USB/IP encapsulates "USB I/O messages" into TCP/IP payloads and transmits them between computers.

So imation that you can do that for all your USB hardware!

Ailurus = "Install software" + "Configure Linux" + "Study Linux skills"

Ailurus is an application which aims at making Linux easier to use.

I just surfed and found this project which is at the code.google pages.
It seems to be an effort to be able to install applications which are not in your distributions repository.
I agree that it would be a good idea to have one installation methode for Linux applications, it would make it so much
easier for many starting linux users. But it is a dream that would never come through, cause of the different ideas the developers
have. There have been serveral others who tried it, but never became a default in our linux world.

However the possibilities are enormous for such a tool, just think of it, no more hassles with dependencies, just click on the package
you want and click on apply to install it, it would be great.

So Ailurus is a effort for applicaitons which are not in your repository, so it might not take over the current repository, perhaps there
they got a key and hopefully it will be available for many distributions, cause now it only supports:

Fedora	10 ~ 12
Ubuntu/KUbuntu/XUbuntu	8.04 ~ 9.10
Mint	5 ~ 8

Perhaps it can be installed on any debian based linux distribution, but have to test this first.
I present you the features of Ailurus below:

And then giving it a go, if you do, please post a message what you think of it, if I should give it a try or not, but it certainly will make it easier for you to install applications which are not default in your distribution repository and that is a good thing.

KOffice 2.1.1 is released.

The KOffice team has released version 2.1.1 of the office package on 14 januari.
This veriosn is the first bugfix release of the 2.1 series of the office package, there are no new functions included in this release but only bugfixes.
KOffice is available in 27 languages and for the most linux distributions is a installation pacakage.

A Windows release of this version of KOffice will be available within a month.

Google Chrome to the thrid place in the browser rankings

Google's webbrowser Chrome has reached the thrid place in the browser rankings.
This according to measurements of a company called Net Applications.
In december Chrome gained a raise of 0,7% and has reached a total of 4,63% which is good for the third place.

On the first place we find Internet Explorer and second is Mozilla's Firefox.
According to the experts the extra 0,7% of Chrome is made possible through the release of a beta version of the webbrowser
fot Linux and Mac OS X. We will keep monitoring this webbrowser ranking to see if it will continue, which will certainly be
likely to happen cause when google releases its chromeOS, it will be placed on netbooks and the Chrome webbrowsers plays
a big part in that OS.

NirSoft's RunAsDate (Windows app)

has created a utility called RunAsDate.
With this utility you can run a program in the date and time that you specify.
The Utility doesn't change the current system date and time of your computer, but only injects the date/time that you specify into the desired application.

With this utility you might be able to extend a trail period of some applications without paying for it, but this is not why the program is made
and the most software will detect if there was a modification with the date/time stamp.

System Requirements:
RunAsDate works under Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Issues:
According to the developersite there is one False Positive issue with RunAsDate when you are using AVG Antivirus.
This antivirus program sees RunAsDate as a program infected with "Trojan horse Generic 10.THK".

This version includes new versions of GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org, Firefox, the Linux kernel, and many more updates and improvements.
According to the website there are more than a 1000 open source desktop applications included.

The basics of openSUSE 11.2 are KDE 4.3 as the default desktop but you can choice GNOME or XFCE (and others) if you want.

This was announced on the 10th of november 2009 on the website bada!

According to the website "bada" means "Ocean" in korean
This was chosen to convey the limitless variety of potential applications which can be created using the new platform. It also alludes to Samsung’s commitment to a variety of open platforms in the mobile industry.

Bada will officially be presented in december in London (UK), then there also will be a Software Development Kit (SDK) for the developers. Bada should be easy and simple in use for the developers so that they can also reach millions of people across the world.

Ubuntu 9.10 is released.

You now can go to the Ubuntu website to get the new release , which is version 9.10.

This version has serveral improvments and bugfixes.
The boot time has been reduced with 30 procent because Ubuntu uses now Upstart instead of the old System-V-init system.
This is the first Ubuntu version which is using Upstart completely.

Among Upstart, Ubuntu 9.10 is now also using the GRUB2 bootmanager, which allows you to boot directly from ext4-partitions but also from RAID-volumes.
EXT4 is also the default filesystem at installation time. Ubuntu 9.10 uses Kernel 2.6.31.1 as its core.

There are serveral types of Ubuntu 9.10 available: a netbook remix, a Desktop and a Server edition. These can be downloaded here.

RedHat says no to Software patens.
According to RedHat it is only limiting the innovation in the software-industry. It does not give the drive to build something new or better.
The software industry is limited by software patents according to a statement of RedHat to the Suprime court.
Here is a case about software patents.
In my eyes it is a good thing to be against software patents, so RedHat has two tumbs up for this one.

FreeBSD 8.0RC1 released

The FreeBSD team has released version 8.0 RC1 (Release Candidate) , this you can read on their maillinglist.

The team doesn't know yet how many RC releases will be there for version 8.0, but they already say that one more is planned, so there will be a RC2.

There are two known problems with RC1, the first is about problems with IPv6, the link to the local address is not reachable, the second problem has to do with the flowtable, which could send packages to the wrong interface. If the problem with the flowtable is not fixable, it will be disabled in RC2.

Mac OS X Camino webbrowser version 2.0 Beta 4 released.

There is a new version released of the Mac OS X webbrowser Camino, this time it is version 2.0 Beta 4.
This version has many notable improvements, there is now a better protection against phishing and malware.
Also the AppleScript functionality has improved and there is a new crash report system.

System requirements are:

Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later
50 MB of free harddisk space
a Mac, both PowerPC and Intel based ones are supported, it is a universal package.

Keep in mind that this is a Beta product, so there still might be some bugs in it, if you find any report it back to the developers so that they can fix it.
And deliver you a new and better product.

Nero Linux 4 has some new features for coping and burning. You now can enable Blue-ray disk error correction so that you can burn Blue-ray disks more reliable on higher speeds. With ISOLINUX you can create bootable disks , also with the minimal needed programs on it.

Hyper-V drivers to be out of the Linux kernel 2.6.33?

Greg Kroah-Hartman filled in a complain and a thread to Microsoft about the Hyper-V drivers they gave to the open source community to be included in the Linux kernel.
The complain was about no cooperation of Microsoft to help making the drivers "kernel-comaptible".
Cause of the many errors in the code, there were over 200 patches to make the code kernel-ready.
However after requests of Greg Kroah-Hartman to Microsoft he got zero response. Cause of this, Greg wrote that the Hyper-V drivers may get out the kernel again cause of no support for the drivers. Microsoft reacted after this thread and if all goes well the Hyper-V drivers may stay in the Linux Kernel.

The Hyper-V drivers should cause the Linux virtual machine preform better under Hyper-V.
The drivers are getting into kernel 2.6.32, but if no support is offered it may get out of it in kernel 2.6.33.

Microsoft has setup a non-profit organisation with the name Codeplex Foundation.
is an organisation for exchanging Open Source Software and knowledge about it.

Microsoft is almost the only big IT-company which didn't join the Linux Foundation. Instead of joining it, Microsoft made its own organisation called Codeplex Foundation.
This Foundation gets its first money from Microsoft , it wants to be a forum for the exchange of code and experience of opensource software.tware.

Easy Peasy 1.5 is out

Easy Peasy Linux version 1.5 is out.
It is a linux distribution meant for netbooks.
It is based on ubuntu linux but optimized for the netbooks.
You first need to download the iso image, which is about 850MB big and put it on a USB Stick of 2GB or more.
Then you have to boot your netbook from it and you can install the easy peasy linux distribution to your netbook SSD or HDD.

Running Google Chrome on my 64 bit Linux

Yesterday I have installed a 64 bit version of google's webbrowser chrome on my sidux x64 linux distribution.
I have tried once before to get the 32 bit version working on my 64 bit OS, but it needed IA32 libs, which I had not installed.
No I wanted a full blown 64 bit version as of which google was working on for Linux.

Yesterday I had one installed it is an unstable version and a debian package, my distro is also based on debian sid and it could be
installed with dpkg -i <filename> starting the browser was done with google-chrome in a terminal or ALT+F2 in KDE.

I must say, for an unstable version it really flies and I am very pleased with it so far.
